ONC vs ZLAB: Which Is the Better Buy in 2026?
Last updated September 2026
Short answer
ONC is the larger of the two ($40.57B market cap): the incumbent the market prices for continued execution (34.88x forward earnings, beta 0.50). ZLAB is the smaller challenger ($2.84B), priced similarly on forward earnings (-11.99x): more room to run, but more to prove. The real question is which set of drivers you believe, and whether owning one (or both) leaves you over-concentrated.
ONC vs ZLAB: the tie-breaker metrics
Same yardstick, side by side (as of September 2026). Valuation lined up like this is most meaningful for two names in the same corner of the market, which these are. Figures are approximate; verify before investing.
| Metric | ONC | ZLAB | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market cap | $40.57B | $2.84B | Size. The larger name is the incumbent; the smaller has more room to grow and more to prove. |
| Forward P/E | 34.88 | -11.99 | Valuation on next year's expected earnings, the same yardstick for both. Lower is cheaper for that growth; higher means the market is paying up. |
| Beta | 0.50 | 0.78 | Volatility vs the market. Above 1 swings harder than the index; below 1 is steadier. Higher beta means bigger drawdowns to hold through. |
| Price vs 52-week range | 80% of range | 50% of range | Where today's price sits between the 52-week low and high. Near the high is momentum with less margin of safety; near the low is out of favor or a discount, depending on why. |
| Price / book | 7.83 | 4.24 | How much you pay over book value. Very high can signal an asset-light, high-return business or a rich price. |
Before you buy: how ONC and ZLAB affect your concentration
The metrics above tell you which is the marginally better business. The bigger risk for most people is not picking the slightly worse stock, it is over-concentrating. ONC and ZLAB share themes, so owning both, or adding either to what you already hold, can quietly push a large share of your portfolio into one bet.
This is the part a generic comparison page cannot answer, because it depends on what you own. Connect your brokerage and Walnut shows your real, combined ONC and ZLAB exposure, flags overlap with your existing positions, and tells you if adding one would tip you past a concentration you are comfortable with, read-only by default, with your login staying at your broker. What does BeOne Medicines (ONC) do?
BeOne Medicines is a global oncology company built around one large drug. BRUKINSA (zanubrutinib), a BTK inhibitor used in chronic lymphocytic leukemia and other B-cell cancers, produced ~$1.2 billion of the ~$1.68 billion in product revenue it booked in the second quarter of 2026. Around it sit TEVIMBRA (tislelizumab), a PD-1 antibody; BEQALZI (sonrotoclax), a BCL2 inhibitor that won U.S. accelerated approval in relapsed or refractory mantle cell lymphoma; ZIIHERA (zanidatamab) in HER2-positive gastroesophageal cancer; and in-licensed Amgen products sold in China. The company was BeiGene until recently. Its Nasdaq listing began trading under symbol ONC instead of BGNE on January 2, 2025, and effective May 27, 2025 the company moved its jurisdiction of incorporation from the Cayman Islands to Switzerland and took the BeOne Medicines name. What a U.S. holder actually owns is an American Depositary Share representing 13 ordinary shares, the same shares listed in Hong Kong (06160) and, as RMB shares, on Shanghai's STAR Market (688235).
What does Zai Lab Limited (ZLAB) do?
Zai Lab was built on a specific arbitrage: find drugs that already work, license the Greater China rights before or during late-stage development, run the local trials and regulatory process, and sell them through a domestic commercial organization that Western partners do not want to build. That produced a portfolio of marketed products including ZEJULA (niraparib, a PARP inhibitor for ovarian cancer), the VYVGART franchise (efgartigimod, partnered with argenx, for generalized myasthenia gravis), XACDURO (sulbactam-durlobactam for Acinetobacter infections) and NUZYRA (omadacycline), with newer approvals for AUGTYRO, TIVDAK and KarXT rolling into launch through 2026. Total revenue was about $460 million in 2025 and roughly $450 million over the trailing twelve months, and management has described the China commercial business as profitable on its own before corporate R&D.
ONC vs ZLAB: how do they differ?
Both fit overlapping themes, but they are not interchangeable. The useful comparison is which set of drivers and risks you want exposure to.
- ONC drivers: BRUKINSA taking share in B-cell cancers; Costs growing slower than revenue.
- ZLAB drivers: Zoci as the first globally owned asset; Newly approved products entering commercial ramp.
Which fits which kind of investor
A faster-growing, richer-valued name usually swings harder, so it suits a longer horizon and a higher tolerance for volatility; a steadier, more cash-generative business suits a more conservative or income-minded investor. The honest test is which set of risks you could hold through a drawdown: Concentration is the central issue: BRUKINSA is roughly 70% of product revenue, so any label setback, reimbursement change or successful patent challenge lands directly on the whole business. For ZLAB, zai Lab's revenue is concentrated in mainland China and is therefore exposed to administered pricing rather than market pricing: national reimbursement drug list renewals cut prices as a condition of volume, and volume-based procurement of generics can collapse a branded franchise quickly, which is what happened to ZEJULA when generic olaparib entered.
ONC or ZLAB: which should you pick?
Growth-minded investors who believe the theme has years to run tend to accept the richer multiple for more upside; value-minded investors lean toward the cheaper forward earnings and steadier profile. Pick ONC if you believe its drivers more; ZLAB if you believe its. Many investors hold both, but since they share themes, that is a concentrated bet, not diversification. Decide deliberately and check overlap. For the full detail, see the ONC and ZLAB guides.
ONC vs ZLAB: the full fundamentals
ONC. Figures come from the Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 and the accompanying Q2 2026 earnings release filed with the SEC on August 5, 2026. The company reports in U.S. dollars, so no conversion is involved despite the Swiss domicile and the Hong Kong and Shanghai listings. Note that per-ADS figures are 13 times the per-ordinary-share figures, which is why a screener showing EPS of $0.16 and one showing $2.12 can both be right.
ZLAB. There is no earnings multiple to quote because Zai Lab does not earn anything yet, so the stock is valued on revenue, cash and pipeline probability instead. Backing out roughly $717 million of cash leaves about $1.6 billion of enterprise value against $450 million of trailing revenue, which is a low multiple for a specialty pharma commercial base and implies the market assigns close to nothing for the wholly owned oncology pipeline. Bulls point at that gap, bears point at a revenue line that shrank year over year in both Q1 and Q2 2026 while operating expenses stayed above $130 million a quarter.
Headline figures (approximate, August 2026): ONC shows revenue (ttm) ~$6.13B, q2 2026 revenue ~$1.71B, up ~30% year over year, gaap net income (ttm) ~$656M (FY2025 was ~$287M, FY2024 a ~$645M loss), q2 2026 diluted eps per ads ~$2.05 GAAP, ~$3.84 adjusted; ZLAB shows revenue (ttm) ~$450 million, up ~5% year over year, q2 2026 revenue ~$106.3 million, down ~3% year over year but up ~11% sequentially on product sales, net loss ~$50.8 million in Q2 2026, ~$188 million over the trailing twelve months, cash and investments ~$717.5 million as of June 30, 2026.
The bottom line: ONC vs ZLAB
ONC and ZLAB are related but distinct: same themes, different businesses and risks. Neither wins in the abstract; the right pick is whichever thesis you actually believe, sized so you are not over-concentrated in one theme. FAQ
What is the difference between ONC and ZLAB?
+
BeOne Medicines is a global oncology company built around one large drug. Zai Lab was built on a specific arbitrage: find drugs that already work, license the Greater China rights before or during late-stage development, run the local trials and regulatory process, and sell them through a domestic commercial organization that Western partners do not want to build. They show up together because they share investment themes, but they are different businesses, so the better fit depends on which thesis you are expressing.
Is ONC or ZLAB the better stock?
+
Neither is universally better. ONC is the larger incumbent; ZLAB is the smaller challenger and looks cheaper on forward earnings. Walnut is informational, not investment advice. Compare what each does, the tie-breaker metrics above, and the risks, then decide which fits your thesis and what you already own.
Which is cheaper, ONC or ZLAB?
+
On forward P/E (as of September 2026), ONC trades at 34.88x and ZLAB at -11.99x, so ZLAB is the cheaper of the two on next year's expected earnings. A lower multiple is not automatically the better buy: a richer valuation can be justified by faster growth, and a lower one can reflect real risk. Weigh the multiple against how fast each business is compounding.
Should you own both ONC and ZLAB?
+
Because they share themes, owning both concentrates you in that theme. That can be intentional (a focused bet) or accidental (less diversification than it looks). Walnut can show your combined exposure across both, and whether adding either over-concentrates you, before you buy.
What are the risks of ONC vs ZLAB?
+
ONC: Concentration is the central issue: BRUKINSA is roughly 70% of product revenue, so any label setback, reimbursement change or successful patent challenge lands directly on the whole business. Zydus filed an ANDA with Paragraph IV certifications against certain BRUKINSA Orange Book patents in early 2026, though it has not challenged the composition of matter patent that runs to 2034. AbbVie's trade secret complaint over the BTK degrader program, including tacabrutideg, survived a motion to dismiss on May 12, 2026 and remains pending with no trial date. About 30% of revenue and a large share of manufacturing and clinical operations sit in China, leaving the company exposed to tariffs, trade-status changes and U.S. or Chinese action against firms with large operations in both. The valuation, near 64 times trailing GAAP earnings on a profit record barely a year old, assumes the growth and the margin improvement both continue. ZLAB: Zai Lab's revenue is concentrated in mainland China and is therefore exposed to administered pricing rather than market pricing: national reimbursement drug list renewals cut prices as a condition of volume, and volume-based procurement of generics can collapse a branded franchise quickly, which is what happened to ZEJULA when generic olaparib entered. The company has not reached consolidated profitability, has lost roughly $188 million over the trailing twelve months, and previously pushed out its own profitability timeline. The pipeline carries binary clinical risk, and the bemarituzumab experience is the cautionary case: an interim survival benefit attenuated at final analysis in FORTITUDE-101, and the related FORTITUDE-102 study was stopped. Multiple plaintiffs' law firms have publicly announced investigations tied to those disclosures and to earlier Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act developments, which is a live overhang even where no certified class action has been reported. The dual Nasdaq and Hong Kong listing adds geopolitical, audit-oversight and currency exposure that a purely US-listed biotech of similar size does not carry, and the ADSs have traded between roughly $15.96 and $39.32 over the past year.
