What to compare when weighing two stocks
A head-to-head between two companies is more useful when you compare them on the same handful of dimensions rather than on price or recent performance alone. Five carry most of the signal:
- Valuation. How much are you paying for each dollar of earnings or sales? A higher multiple is not automatically worse; it usually reflects faster expected growth. The question is whether the premium is justified by the business.
- Growth. Which company is expanding revenue and earnings faster, and is that growth accelerating or slowing? Two firms in the same theme can be at very different stages.
- Margins and profitability. Higher, stable margins signal pricing power and operating discipline. A company growing fast but losing money is a different risk profile from a steady cash generator.
- Moat. How defensible is the business? Scale, brand, network effects, switching costs, and patents all make a company harder to displace. A wider moat tends to protect returns over time.
- Risk. Debt load, customer or product concentration, regulatory exposure, and cyclicality all shape the downside. The riskier name may still be the better fit, but only if you are sizing it accordingly.

How to read a stock comparison
