Is IDT a Buy or a Sell? The Bull and Bear Case (2026)
Last updated July 2026
Short answer
Both cases are real, which is why the question is contested. The bull case for IDT Corporation (IDT) rests on NRS terminal network and payments: NRS grew fiscal 2026 revenue about 24% to ~$159 million and adjusted EBITDA about 30% to ~$46 million. The bear case rests on traditional Communications is in long-term secular decline as messaging apps replace paid international calls, and it remains the majority of revenue. We do not give a verdict. What follows is each case at full strength, so you can decide which set of assumptions you actually believe. Walnut is not an investment adviser.
IDT Corporation, based in Newark, New Jersey and controlled by founder Howard Jonas, runs four segments. National Retail Solutions (NRS) sells point-of-sale terminals, payment processing and advertising to independent convenience stores and bodegas. BOSS Money is a digital international money-transfer service. net2phone sells cloud phone and contact-center software to businesses. Traditional Communications, which includes BOSS Revolution calling, IDT Global carrier services and prepaid calling, still brings in about two thirds of revenue, roughly $866 million of the ~$1.3 billion total in fiscal 2026 (year ended July 31, 2026). The investment picture comes down to mix shift. In fiscal 2026 NRS revenue grew about 24%, BOSS Money about 14% and net2phone subscription revenue about 11%, while Traditional Communications was roughly flat and its operating income slipped about 5%. Consolidated operating income still rose about 21% to ~$121 million, and management guided fiscal 2027 adjusted EBITDA to $176 to $180 million. With ~$272 million of unrestricted cash and no debt, IDT has room for buybacks and a small dividend, but it also has a controlling shareholder and a history of spinning off businesses rather than keeping them. Howard Jonas started the company in 1990 as International Discount Telephone, took it public in 1996 and moved the listing to the NYSE in 2001. IDT has a long habit of separating businesses and handing them to shareholders: CTM Media (later IDW Media) in 2009, Genie Energy in 2011, Straight Path in 2013, Zedge in 2016 and Rafael Holdings in 2018. net2phone has its own history inside the group; IDT sold a stake in it to AT&T in 2000 for about $1.1 billion and later bought it back. Today the company has about 2,400 staff in more than 30 countries. Shmuel Jonas, Howard's son, is CEO and Marcelo Fischer is CFO. Control is concentrated by design. Howard Jonas owns every Class A share (about 1.57 million, at three votes each), while the roughly 23.7 million Class B shares that trade publicly carry one tenth of a vote each. That gave him about 70.3% of combined voting power as of September 24, 2025. IDT also does not own all of its best growth asset: it held 81.6% of NRS at July 31, 2025, or 79.5% on a fully diluted basis, so part of NRS's profit belongs to minority holders.
The bull case for IDT
1. NRS terminal network and payments
NRS grew fiscal 2026 revenue about 24% to ~$159 million and adjusted EBITDA about 30% to ~$46 million. Growth comes from adding terminals at independent retailers, attaching payment processing, and selling advertising and data against that installed base. It is now IDT's most profitable growth segment. At the end of fiscal 2026 NRS served 35,400 retailer locations with 40,400 active terminals and 29,400 payment processing accounts. Q4 revenue of $45.0M split into merchant services $28.5M (+31%), advertising and data $10.1M (+49%), software fees $4.6M and terminal sales $1.8M, so hardware is now a small part of the model. Average monthly gross profit per location rose 22% to $383. Q4 margins were helped by a one-time import tariff refund; the 92% full-year gross margin is the figure management points to. New delivery integrations (Uber Eats, after Grubhub and DoorDash) extend what the terminal does, and fiscal 2027 guidance calls for NRS revenue growth of about 20% to 25%.
2. BOSS Money remittances
BOSS Money revenue rose about 14% to ~$176 million in fiscal 2026, with operating income up about 40%. The business targets immigrant communities that already use BOSS Revolution calling, which keeps customer acquisition cheaper than for a standalone remittance app. The Fintech segment handled 27.4 million transactions in fiscal 2026 (+15%), and digital channels reached 88% of Q4 volume as retail-agent revenue fell about 17%. A new federal tax on cash-funded remittances is pushing senders toward the app, and digital send volume rose 35% for the year. Average revenue per BOSS Money transaction slipped 2% to $5.68 in Q4, a sign of pricing pressure. The network pays out in 50 destination countries through about 1,800 disbursement partners. IDT says its share of the US-to-Mexico corridor rose from under 2% to just under 3% in about a year, and it is building WhatsApp transfers, a US digital wallet and a reloadable card.
3. net2phone profitability
net2phone subscription revenue grew about 11% to ~$95 million and adjusted EBITDA rose about 33% to ~$16 million. The segment is a small player in cloud communications, so the story is margin expansion and AI contact-center features rather than share gains against much larger rivals. Seats reached 447,000 at fiscal year end (+6%), contact-center-as-a-service revenue grew 24% in Q4, and operating income rose 84% to $9.1M for the year. Management expects net2phone to pass $100 million of annual recurring revenue in the current quarter. Its AI products include an AI Agent and Coach AI, and guidance calls for only a modest rise in fiscal 2027 adjusted EBITDA because AI development spending is going up. The unit operates in the US, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America and Spain, and about 84% of its roughly 540 employees work outside the US.
4. Cash generation from legacy calling
Traditional Communications still produced ~$77 million of adjusted EBITDA in fiscal 2026 even as calling minutes decline industry-wide. How slowly that cash stream fades largely determines how much capital IDT can put into the growth units and buybacks. Inside the segment the pieces are moving in different directions. IDT Digital Payments, mainly mobile top-up for about 194 carriers in more than 113 countries plus the Zendit business-to-business platform, grew 3% to $429.2M. IDT Global, the wholesale voice and SMS carrier business, grew 10% to $231.5M. BOSS Revolution calling fell 15% to $180.3M, and management expects double-digit declines to continue. Segment gross profit fell 4% to $163M, and adjusted EBITDA held up only because sales and administrative costs were cut by nearly 6%.
5. Dividend, buybacks and a cash-rich balance sheet
IDT suspended its dividend in fiscal 2018 to favor buybacks, reinstated it at $0.05 a quarter in 2024, raised it to $0.06 in 2025 and to $0.07 during fiscal 2026; the latest payment was due October 14, 2026. The buyback program, approved in January 2016 for up to 8.0 million Class B shares, had about 4.4 million shares left at July 31, 2025, before the fiscal 2026 purchases of 421,938 shares for $21.0M. The cash picture needs a careful read. At July 31, 2026 IDT held $220.7M of cash and equivalents and $38.6M of debt securities, plus $138.7M of restricted cash. Operating cash flow fell to $91.1M from $127.1M, and excluding changes in customer deposits it fell to $60.9M from $107.8M, while capital spending was $23.1M.
6. Spin-off optionality
Given five past spin-offs, investors often ask which unit goes next. IDT had planned to spin off net2phone on or before July 31, 2022, then postponed it in May 2022, citing market conditions, and said it would keep the business while making it profitable. net2phone now is profitable, at roughly a 17% adjusted EBITDA margin, but IDT has not announced a new spin-off date. The three growth units together produced 53% of segment adjusted EBITDA before corporate costs in fiscal 2026, up from 46%, on about a third of revenue, which is the arithmetic behind any argument that the parts are worth more apart.
The bear case for IDT
Traditional Communications is in long-term secular decline as messaging apps replace paid international calls, and it remains the majority of revenue. BOSS Money competes with Remitly, Western Union, Wise and others in a price-competitive market, and remittance flows are exposed to US immigration policy and proposed remittance taxes. NRS depends on small independent retailers and faces larger point-of-sale and payments players. IDT is effectively controlled by Howard Jonas through Class A shares, so outside shareholders have limited influence over spin-offs, related-party dealings and capital allocation. Some of fiscal 2026's strength may not repeat: NRS's record Q4 included a one-time tariff refund, and cash generated by operations, excluding customer deposits, fell by roughly 44%. The money-transfer and calling businesses carry regulatory costs, including a $2.9 million Universal Service Fund audit charge that IDT has appealed and $21.1 million of accrued FCC-related fees at July 31, 2025. Minority holders own close to a fifth of NRS. Related-party links run through the Jonas family's other public companies; IDT, for instance, rents office space in Jerusalem from Rafael Holdings. The long-running Straight Path stockholder suit, which sought about $1.2 billion, ended in IDT's favor when the Delaware Supreme Court affirmed the trial ruling on December 3, 2025.
The bear case deserves the same attention as the bull case, and usually gets less. If you are holding IDT already, the question is not whether these risks exist but whether any of them has moved from possible to actually happening in the reported numbers.
Where analysts land on IDT
Too few analysts publish on IDT for a consensus target to mean anything, so there is no professional average to weigh against your own view. That cuts both ways: less informed opinion to lean on, and less of it already priced in. The IDT forecast page covers what coverage does exist.
How is IDT valued? (as of October 2026)
Snapshot for IDT as of October 2026, sourced from Yahoo Finance and may be delayed. Valuation figures move with price and earnings; verify the current numbers with your broker before deciding.
- Revenue (FY2026, ended July 2026): ~$1.30B
- Net income (FY2026): ~$87M
- Diluted EPS (FY2026): ~$3.46
- Adjusted EBITDA (FY2026): ~$155M
- Market cap: ~$2.0B
- Trailing P/E: ~24x
At $81.49 (October 9, 2026 close), IDT trades near 24x trailing GAAP earnings of $3.46 per share and about 21x non-GAAP EPS of $3.82. Netting out ~$272 million of unrestricted cash and investments and no debt, enterprise value is around $1.8 billion, or about 10x the midpoint of fiscal 2027 adjusted EBITDA guidance of $176 to $180 million. Part of that cash reflects customer deposits in the fintech businesses rather than freely available capital, and because IDT owns about 82% of NRS, not all of NRS's EBITDA accrues to IDT shareholders. Fiscal 2027 guidance also calls for gross profit of $545 to $555 million, about 11% growth at the midpoint.
How do you decide if IDT is a buy?
Rather than asking whether IDT is a buy in the abstract, it tends to help to answer four questions:
- Thesis: do you believe the bull case above, and is it still true today?
- Time horizon: a single stock can be volatile, so a longer horizon absorbs more of the swings.
- Position sizing: a thesis can be right and the sizing still wrong; decide how much of your portfolio one name should be.
- Overlap: check whether you already hold IDT indirectly through an index or sector ETF before adding more.
What would change your mind on IDT
Write the tripwires down before you need them. Deciding what would falsify your view is far harder once a position is moving against you.
- Bull case breaks if: NRS terminal network and payments stalls in the reported numbers rather than in the narrative around them.
- Bear case breaks if: traditional Communications is in long-term secular decline as messaging apps replace paid international calls, and it remains the majority of revenue fails to materialise over several reporting periods while the drivers keep compounding.
- Neither matters if: the position has grown large enough that being wrong would damage the whole portfolio. Sizing overrides the argument.

FAQ
Is IDT a good stock to buy right now?
+
That depends on which case you find more convincing, and both are on this page. The bull case rests on NRS terminal network and payments, with revenue (fy2026, ended july 2026) at ~$1.30B. The bear case rests on traditional Communications is in long-term secular decline as messaging apps replace paid international calls, and it remains the majority of revenue. If you believe the thesis, the real questions become sizing and overlap rather than timing. Walnut is not an investment adviser and this is not a recommendation.
Should I sell IDT?
+
Nobody can answer that for you, and the honest version of the question is narrower: has anything changed in the reason you bought it? The bear case on this page is the place to check. Traditional Communications is in long-term secular decline as messaging apps replace paid international calls, and it remains the majority of revenue. If that risk is what you were worried about and it is now playing out, that is a real signal. If the price simply fell while the thesis held, that is a different situation entirely. Walnut is not an investment adviser.
