Is MARUY a Buy or a Sell? The Bull and Bear Case (2026)

Last updated July 2026

Short answer

Both cases are real, which is why the question is contested. The bull case for Marubeni Corporation (MARUY) rests on Record profits and the fiscal 2026 forecast: Marubeni earned a record ¥543.9 billion in fiscal 2025, up 8.1%, helped by a ¥76.5 billion valuation gain from integrating a real estate business. The bear case rests on commodity prices are the largest swing factor: copper, steelmaking coal and aluminum lifted first-quarter fiscal 2026 resources profit by about ¥23 billion, and the same exposure works in reverse if prices fall or Chinese demand weakens. We do not give a verdict. What follows is each case at full strength, so you can decide which set of assumptions you actually believe. Walnut is not an investment adviser.

Marubeni Corporation is a Tokyo-based sogo shosha, a trading and investment conglomerate that buys, sells, finances and owns businesses across most of the physical economy. It reports ten operating segments: Lifestyle, Food & Agri Business, Metals & Mineral Resources, Energy & Chemicals, Power & Infrastructure Services, Finance, Leasing & Real Estate Business, Aerospace & Mobility, IT Solutions, and two Next Generation units. Much of its profit comes from stakes in operating companies rather than trading margins: US farm inputs through Helena Agri-Enterprises, US beef through Creekstone Farms, Chilean copper mines, Australian steelmaking coal, aircraft leasing through Aircastle, the aircraft parts distributor DASI, power plants and retail power trading through SmartestEnergy, and US used-car lending through Nowlake. Reported revenue for the year ended March 31, 2026 (fiscal 2025) was ¥8,265.8 billion, but for a trading house net profit is the better gauge of scale, because revenue includes large volumes of low-margin trading. The company's roots go back to 1858, when Chubei Itoh began trading linen in Osaka, an origin it shares with today's Itochu. The modern Marubeni was set up as a separate company in 1949 during the postwar breakup of Japan's large business groups. Over the past 15 years it expanded abroad through acquisitions including Gavilon (whose grain business it later sold, keeping the fertilizer side) and Creekstone, and took aircraft lessor Aircastle private in 2020 with Mizuho Leasing. Masayuki Omoto is President and CEO, and Chijo Tajima is CFO. Ownership is mostly institutional. As of March 31, 2026 the largest registered holders were trust accounts of The Master Trust Bank of Japan (~14.6%) and Custody Bank of Japan (~6.4%), which hold shares for index funds and pension managers, along with a State Street Bank and Trust custody account at ~9.8% and Japanese insurers such as Meiji Yasuda Life (~2.3%). Berkshire Hathaway disclosed stakes in Marubeni and the other four big trading houses in August 2020 and has said since then that it increased them. Marubeni had about 1.627 billion shares outstanding at June 30, 2026, net of treasury stock, and 353,845 shareholders of record in March 2026. For US investors, MARUY is an unsponsored ADR program run by Citibank as depositary, with Mizuho as custodian, quoted on the OTC Pink market in US dollars. Unsponsored means Marubeni did not set it up and does not file reports with the SEC; disclosure comes from Marubeni's own Tokyo filings and English-language IR site. Citi changed the ratio from 10 ordinary shares per ADR to one share per ADR (announced April 28, 2026), which is why the quote fell from roughly $290 to roughly $32 in mid-2026 with no change in value. At ~$29.78 in October 2026 the ADR lines up with the Tokyo price of ¥4,702 at about ¥158 per dollar. Volume is light, so the Tokyo line is the deeper market.

The bull case for MARUY

1. Record profits and the fiscal 2026 forecast

Marubeni earned a record ¥543.9 billion in fiscal 2025, up 8.1%, helped by a ¥76.5 billion valuation gain from integrating a real estate business. For fiscal 2026 (year to March 2027) it forecasts net profit of ¥580 billion and adjusted net profit, which strips out one-off items, of ¥540 billion. The first quarter came in at ¥186.4 billion of net profit, up 20.7% year over year, and ¥177 billion adjusted, 32% and 33% of the full-year targets. Management left the forecast unchanged in August and said it would review it with second-quarter results. Core operating cash flow reached ¥249.9 billion in the quarter, a record.

2. Copper, coal and other commodities

The resources side (mainly Metals & Mineral Resources plus parts of Energy & Chemicals) is forecast to contribute about ¥161 billion of adjusted net profit in fiscal 2026, against ¥382 billion from non-resources. In the June 2026 quarter resources profit rose by ¥23 billion to ¥51 billion as copper, steelmaking coal and aluminum prices rose; copper alone added about ¥11 billion. Marubeni's copper exposure is concentrated in Chile, where an expansion at one of its mines is under way. This gives earnings real upside when metal prices rise and real downside when they fall. Asked in May whether the copper outlook was too cautious, CEO Omoto said the company does expect some upside.

3. Food, agriculture and US consumer businesses

Food & Agri Business is forecast at ¥88 billion of adjusted net profit for fiscal 2026, the second-largest segment. Helena, the US crop-inputs distributor, has been growing steadily, and Marubeni is applying the Helena model in Brazil through Adubos Real. Creekstone has been a drag: weaker US beef processing results cut Food & Agri profit to ¥31.4 billion in the first quarter from ¥35.5 billion. In finance, Nowlake's credit losses on used-car loans made to subprime borrowers before 2024 have risen since late 2025, which management linked partly to US tariffs hitting the most vulnerable borrowers, and it expects a recovery in the second half of the fiscal year.

4. Aviation, energy trading and power

Aerospace & Mobility doubled first-quarter profit to ¥22.8 billion on stronger aviation aftermarket trading and a valuation gain from making DASI a wholly owned subsidiary, and Aircastle's leasing profit rose. Energy & Chemicals nearly tripled to ¥25.8 billion on petrochemical trading and North American natural gas trading. Power & Infrastructure Services rose to ¥29.3 billion, including a ~¥13 billion gain on selling an overseas power project stake. Under the GC2027 plan Marubeni is holding back on new power plant ownership, treating existing assets as divestment candidates, while growing wholesale and retail power trading such as SmartestEnergy and Factor Energia.

5. Shareholder returns and the GC2027 plan

Marubeni's three-year plan, GC2027, covers fiscal 2025 to 2027. In August 2026 it raised the plan's new investment and capital spending ceiling by ¥250 billion to ¥1,950 billion and its total shareholder return target from ¥700 billion to ¥900 billion. It added a ¥100 billion buyback (up to 40 million shares, August 2026 to March 2027) to the ¥45 billion announced in May, for ¥145 billion in fiscal 2026. That follows ¥70 billion repurchased between February 2025 and January 2026 and ¥60 billion between February and June 2026. The CFO said the aim is to lift ROE, with 15% described as a minimum baseline, while keeping the net debt-to-equity ratio (0.46x in June 2026) under about 0.6x.

6. The yen

Currency cuts two ways for MARUY holders. Much of Marubeni's profit is earned in dollars and Australian dollars, so a weak yen raises reported yen earnings: the US dollar averaged ¥159.49 in the June 2026 quarter against ¥144.59 a year earlier, and management attributed part of the ¥29 billion first-quarter boost from external factors to currency. Its fiscal 2026 plan assumes ¥150 per dollar. For a dollar-based ADR holder, though, a weaker yen lowers the dollar value of the Tokyo share price and of each yen dividend. The ADR's return therefore reflects both Marubeni's results and the exchange rate.

The bear case for MARUY

Commodity prices are the largest swing factor: copper, steelmaking coal and aluminum lifted first-quarter fiscal 2026 resources profit by about ¥23 billion, and the same exposure works in reverse if prices fall or Chinese demand weakens. Several US businesses are under pressure. Nowlake's losses on older subprime used-car loans have risen since the third quarter of fiscal 2025, Creekstone's beef margins have weakened, and management tied part of the credit stress to US tariffs. The Wholesale and Retail Power Trading Business had a weak fiscal 2025, showing how quickly trading profits can reverse. Marubeni's history includes large write-downs on overseas acquisitions such as Gavilon, and the higher GC2027 investment ceiling raises the stakes on new deals, which management says take about five years to reach its 10% ROIC target. Japanese trading houses also face governance and capital-efficiency pressure from investors, and returns increasingly depend on buybacks. ADR-specific risks matter too. MARUY is unsponsored and quoted on OTC Pink, so trading is thin, bid-ask spreads can be wide, and Marubeni has no reporting relationship with the SEC. Dividends arrive in dollars after currency conversion, Citi's depositary fees and Japanese withholding tax (15.315% by default, 10% for US residents if treaty relief is applied), and some US brokers charge extra for foreign OTC trades. Yen moves can offset gains in the Tokyo share price. The 1:1 ratio change in 2026 also means many price charts and screeners still show a misleading 52-week high near $426.

The bear case deserves the same attention as the bull case, and usually gets less. If you are holding MARUY already, the question is not whether these risks exist but whether any of them has moved from possible to actually happening in the reported numbers.

Where analysts land on MARUY

Too few analysts publish on MARUY for a consensus target to mean anything, so there is no professional average to weigh against your own view. That cuts both ways: less informed opinion to lean on, and less of it already priced in. The MARUY forecast page covers what coverage does exist.

Snapshot for MARUY as of October 2026, sourced from Yahoo Finance and may be delayed. Valuation figures move with price and earnings; verify the current numbers with your broker before deciding.

  • Net profit (FY ended March 2026): ¥543.9B (record)
  • FY2026 net profit forecast: ¥580.0B (EPS ~¥356.75)
  • Q1 FY2026 net profit: ¥186.4B (+20.7% YoY)
  • Market cap: ~¥7.6T (~$48B) at ¥4,702 in Tokyo
  • Price / forecast earnings: ~13x
  • Dividend (FY2026 forecast): ¥115 per share, ~2.4% before withholding

At ¥4,702 a share in Tokyo, Marubeni trades at roughly 13 times its fiscal 2026 EPS forecast of ¥356.75 and about 1.7 times equity per share of ¥2,742.51 at June 30, 2026. Revenue of ¥8.27 trillion in fiscal 2025 overstates the business, because it includes large volumes of low-margin trading; profit and cash flow are the better measures. Core operating cash flow is planned at ¥660 billion for fiscal 2026, above the ¥580 billion net profit forecast, which is what funds buybacks and a dividend that has risen from ¥107.5 in fiscal 2025 to a planned ¥115. The yen is the swing factor in dollar terms: the MARUY quote of ~$29.78 equals the Tokyo price at about ¥158 per dollar, so a one-yen move shifts the ADR by roughly 0.6% before any change in the shares.

How do you decide if MARUY is a buy?

Rather than asking whether MARUY is a buy in the abstract, it tends to help to answer four questions:

  • Thesis: do you believe the bull case above, and is it still true today?
  • Time horizon: a single stock can be volatile, so a longer horizon absorbs more of the swings.
  • Position sizing: a thesis can be right and the sizing still wrong; decide how much of your portfolio one name should be.
  • Overlap: check whether you already hold MARUY indirectly through an index or sector ETF before adding more.

What would change your mind on MARUY

Write the tripwires down before you need them. Deciding what would falsify your view is far harder once a position is moving against you.

  • Bull case breaks if: Record profits and the fiscal 2026 forecast stalls in the reported numbers rather than in the narrative around them.
  • Bear case breaks if: commodity prices are the largest swing factor: copper, steelmaking coal and aluminum lifted first-quarter fiscal 2026 resources profit by about ¥23 billion, and the same exposure works in reverse if prices fall or Chinese demand weakens fails to materialise over several reporting periods while the drivers keep compounding.
  • Neither matters if: the position has grown large enough that being wrong would damage the whole portfolio. Sizing overrides the argument.

FAQ

Is MARUY a good stock to buy right now?

+

That depends on which case you find more convincing, and both are on this page. The bull case rests on Record profits and the fiscal 2026 forecast, with net profit (fy ended march 2026) at ¥543.9B (record). The bear case rests on commodity prices are the largest swing factor: copper, steelmaking coal and aluminum lifted first-quarter fiscal 2026 resources profit by about ¥23 billion, and the same exposure works in reverse if prices fall or Chinese demand weakens. If you believe the thesis, the real questions become sizing and overlap rather than timing. Walnut is not an investment adviser and this is not a recommendation.

Should I sell MARUY?

+

Nobody can answer that for you, and the honest version of the question is narrower: has anything changed in the reason you bought it? The bear case on this page is the place to check. Commodity prices are the largest swing factor: copper, steelmaking coal and aluminum lifted first-quarter fiscal 2026 resources profit by about ¥23 billion, and the same exposure works in reverse if prices fall or Chinese demand weakens. If that risk is what you were worried about and it is now playing out, that is a real signal. If the price simply fell while the thesis held, that is a different situation entirely. Walnut is not an investment adviser.

One of Japan's five big trading houses, investing in food and agriculture, metals and mining, energy, power, aviation leasing and finance worldwide.

What would have to change for MARUY to stop being worth holding?

+

Decide that in advance, because it is far harder to think clearly once a position is moving against you. The concrete tripwires here: the driver behind the bull case (Record profits and the fiscal 2026 forecast) stalling in the reported numbers rather than in the narrative, the risk above (commodity prices are the largest swing factor: copper, steelmaking coal and aluminum lifted first-quarter fiscal 2026 resources profit by about ¥23 billion, and the same exposure works in reverse if prices fall or Chinese demand weakens) turning from a possibility into a reported fact, or the position growing large enough that a bad outcome would matter to your whole portfolio regardless of who is right.

What is MARUY?

+

MARUY is the US over-the-counter ticker for an unsponsored American depositary receipt of Marubeni Corporation, a Japanese trading and investment conglomerate. Citibank is the depositary. Since a 2026 ratio change, each MARUY ADR represents one ordinary Marubeni share, which trades in Tokyo under code 8002.

Why did MARUY stock drop about 90% in 2026?

+

It did not lose value. Citibank changed the ADR ratio from 10 ordinary shares per ADR to one share per ADR, announced April 28, 2026. Each ADR now represents a tenth as many shares, so the quote fell from roughly $290 to about $30. Marubeni's Tokyo share price was roughly level over the same months.

Does Marubeni pay a dividend?

+

Yes, twice a year, with record dates at the end of September and March. Marubeni paid ¥107.5 per share for fiscal 2025 and forecasts ¥115 for fiscal 2026 (¥57.5 interim and ¥57.5 year-end) under a progressive dividend policy. MARUY holders receive dollars after currency conversion, depositary fees and Japanese withholding tax.
