How it works

What happens on the day

  1. Set it up once

In Invest, choose Recurring, an amount and a schedule.

  2. Walnut checks your cash

It reads the cash in your brokerage account.

  3. It buys to your weights

The amount is split across your target weights.

  4. You hear how it went

Every buy and skip shows in notifications.

Built to be trusted with money

Four rules every plan follows.

Walnut never moves money from your bank.

  • Never twice

    Each period is invested once.

  • Never silently skipped

Short on cash, it retries for up to 5 days.

  • No catch-up bursts

After a pause, it resumes at the next date.

  • Your day, every month

The 31st becomes Feb 28, then Mar 31 again.

The recurring investing guideBy the Walnut team · Updated October 2026 · 2 min read

Common questions about recurring buys.

Does Walnut take money from my bank?

Short answer

No. It spends cash already in your brokerage account, put there by you or your broker's automatic transfer.

If your broker pulls $200 on the 28th, set the plan for the 1st. Walnut uses cash, not margin buying power.

What happens if there isn't enough cash?

Short answer

Walnut retries each weekday for up to 5 days and emails you the last retry date. If the cash never arrives, the period is marked missed.

Missed periods are not made up later.

How much do I need to start?

Short answer

It depends on your smallest weight. Public needs $5 per fractional order, so a 10% holding needs at least $50. Walnut warns you at setup.

Plans run from $5 to $100,000 a period. A Robinhood Agentic account has a $1 floor per order.
