How Walnut works: an AI that reads the portfolio you already own

Last updated August 2026

Short answer

Connect the brokerage account you already have, and an AI assistant can answer questions about your real holdings in plain English. Use Walnut's own assistant, or connect Claude, ChatGPT, Codex or Cursor to the same data through one URL. Your broker login never leaves your broker, your holdings are read-only by default, and no order is ever placed unless you approve that exact order. It is free, because Walnut never takes custody of your money. Walnut is not an investment adviser.

What the assistant can actually see

This is the whole difference between an AI that talks about investing and one that can talk about your investing. Once a broker is connected, the assistant reads:

  • Your holdings. every position in the brokerage account you connect, with share counts and current value
  • Live prices. current prices for what you own, refreshed from the market rather than remembered
  • Performance. how each holding and the whole portfolio has moved, measured against the S&P 500
  • Drift. how far each position has moved from the target weight you set
  • Rebalance math. the trades that would bring a portfolio back to its targets, as a description you review
  • Your portfolios. the thematic portfolios you have built in Walnut, their holdings and their stated reasoning
  • Order history. the orders you placed through Walnut, including any still awaiting the broker
  • Which brokers are connected. and whether each one can place orders or is read-only

It does not see your broker username or password, because you never provide them. You connect through a secure connection where your credentials stay at the broker.

Example questions you can ask

Every question below is one the assistant answers against live data from your own account, not from general knowledge.

Your portfolio

  • How is my portfolio doing against the S&P 500 this year?
  • Which of my holdings are dragging my return, and by how much?
  • Am I too concentrated in tech? Show me the weights.

A single holding

  • I own NVDA. What has it actually done for me since I bought it?
  • What does this company do, and why might it have moved this week?

Research and ideas

  • Build me a focused portfolio around grid infrastructure and explain each pick.
  • What would I be buying if I put $500 into this idea?

Rebalancing

  • How far has each position drifted from its target weight?
  • What trades would bring this back to target?

Placing an order

  • Invest $500 in this, and show me the breakdown before anything is placed.

You approve every order

Walnut's own assistant can place real orders at your broker, and the sequence is fixed. It previews first: you see the exact breakdown of what the money would buy before anything is placed. It states plainly that this places real orders with your own money. Then it asks you a direct yes or no, and only a clear yes places anything. A vague answer is not a yes.

The preview mints a one-time confirmation token, and the order will not go through without that exact token from that exact preview. An assistant cannot skip the preview, reuse an old one, or place an order larger than the one you saw. You also always get a link to place the same order yourself in the app if you would rather do it by hand.

The connector you add to Claude or ChatGPT is read-only. It analyzes and it can draft a portfolio for you to review, but it does not place orders.

Which brokers you can connect

Most major US brokerages connect for reading your holdings, which is what the analysis needs. A smaller set also supports placing orders, because many brokers expose account data but not trading.

Walnut does not publish a fixed list here, deliberately. The trade-enabled set changes as brokers add support, and a list written into a page goes stale and becomes wrong. Walnut checks your actual connection and tells you what it can do, so you find out from your own account rather than from marketing copy. See which brokers have an AI assistant for the wider picture.

Try Walnut on top of your broker

Walnut is the AI that knows your portfolio: ask anything in plain English, research any fund, and get an honest second opinion. On the broker you already use, read-only, and you approve every trade. Walnut is not a registered investment adviser.

What Walnut does not do

  • It does not manage your money. Nothing is under management, so there is no percentage-of-assets fee, and equally nobody rebalances for you.
  • It does not give investment advice. Walnut is not an investment adviser. It describes what you own and what trades would move toward your own targets.
  • It does not promise to beat the market. Walnut measures your portfolio against the S&P 500 and shows you the answer, whichever way it goes.
  • It cannot see settled cash at your broker. A funded-looking account can still reject an order, so keep enough available cash for what you are placing.

How it compares to the alternatives

If you want a portfolio managed for you and are happy to move your money, a robo-advisor is the right category, and the honest ranking is on that page. If you want a person, a financial advisor does things software does not. Walnut suits the opposite preference: keeping the broker and the decisions you already have, and adding an assistant that can actually see them. FAQ

How does Walnut work?

+

You connect the brokerage account you already have. Walnut reads your holdings, read-only by default, and then an AI assistant can answer questions about them in plain English: how each position is doing, where you are concentrated, what has drifted from target. You can use Walnut's own assistant, or connect Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity or any MCP client to the same data. Nothing moves to Walnut, and no order is placed unless you approve it.

What can the AI actually see?

+

Your positions and share counts, live prices for them, performance against the S&P 500, drift from your target weights, the thematic portfolios you have built, your Walnut order history, and which brokers you have connected. It cannot see your broker password, because you never give it one.

Do I have to move my money to Walnut?

+

No, and that is the point of it. Walnut sits on top of the broker you already use. Your account stays where it is, your money stays where it is, and Walnut reads it. This is the main difference from a robo-advisor, which takes custody of your money and manages it for you.

Can Walnut place trades?

+

Yes, through Walnut's own assistant on the web, and only with your explicit approval each time. The assistant previews the order first, shows the exact breakdown, states plainly that it places real orders with your own money, and asks you a direct yes or no. Only a clear yes places anything. The connector you add to Claude or ChatGPT is read-only and never places orders.

How do I know an order will not be placed by accident?

+

The preview mints a one-time confirmation token, and the order tool will not run without that exact token from that exact preview. An assistant cannot skip the preview, reuse an old one, or place an order larger than the one you saw. You also always get a link to place the same order yourself in the app instead.

Is it safe to connect my brokerage to an AI?

+

Your broker login stays with your broker. Walnut connects through a secure connection and never sees or stores your broker password, and the AI never sees it either. Holdings are read-only by default. You authenticate to the connector with your own Walnut account and approve access before anything is shared.

Which brokers can I connect?

+

Most major US brokerages connect for reading your holdings. A smaller set also supports placing orders, because many brokers expose data but not trading. Walnut checks your specific connection and tells you which one you have rather than promising a list that goes stale.

What is the connector URL?

+

The Walnut MCP server is https://walnutinvest.com/api/connector/mcp. Add it as a custom connector in Claude, ChatGPT, Codex or Cursor, then sign in with your Walnut account and approve access. There is nothing to download and no API key.

How is this different from just asking ChatGPT about investing?

+

ChatGPT on its own cannot see what you own, so it answers from general knowledge and assumptions. Once Walnut is connected it answers from your actual positions, at current prices. The question changes from "is NVDA a good stock" to "what has NVDA done for me, and how much of my portfolio is it now".

How is this different from a robo-advisor?

+

A robo-advisor holds your money and makes the decisions for you, for a fee that is usually around 0.25% of assets per year. Walnut does the opposite: you keep your broker and every decision, and there is no percentage-of-assets fee because nothing is under management. The trade-off is real in both directions: nobody rebalances for you.

What does it cost?

+

Walnut is free to use, including the connector. There is no percentage-of-assets fee, because Walnut never takes custody of your money.

Does Walnut give investment advice?

+

No. Walnut is not an investment adviser and does not provide investment advice. It describes what you own, how it has performed, and what trades would move a portfolio toward the targets you set. Every decision and every order is yours.

What does Walnut not do?

+

It does not manage money for you, does not move your money, does not place an order you have not just approved, and does not promise to beat the market. It also cannot see settled cash at your broker, so a funded-looking account can still reject an order.

Walnut is informational and is not an investment adviser. Nothing here is investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Broker support, features, and availability change; verify the current details on your own account.
