Neobank Statistics (2026)

Updated July 2026

The short answer

Neobanks (digital-only banks with no branches) serve roughly 350 million users worldwide, a number that has more than doubled since 2021. Nubank is the largest with about 131 million customers, Revolut has 68 million, and Chime is the biggest in the US with 9.5 million active members. The global market was valued near $211 billion in 2025. Growth is fast, but most neobanks still are not profitable.

The state of neobanking today

A neobank is a bank that lives entirely on your phone, with no branches, usually built on top of a partner bank's license. In little more than a decade the category has gone from novelty to mainstream: roughly 350 million people use one worldwide, and in the US about 31% of adults now have a neobank relationship.

The scale leaders are no longer startups. Nubank has 131 million customers, Revolut has 68 million and turned a $2.3 billion profit, and Chime went public in 2025. The story of 2025-2026 is a category that finally reached size, even as most individual players still lose money.

How many people use neobanks

Global neobank users have more than doubled in five years, from about 146 million in 2021 to roughly 210 million in 2022 and an estimated 350 million by 2026 (see the chart and table below). These are aggregator estimates built on Statista-style modeling, so treat them as directional.

One catch: people hold accounts at more than one neobank, so summing brand-level counts (Nubank plus Revolut plus Chime and so on) yields 500 million-plus customer relationships, well above the number of unique users. Millennials and Gen Z make up about 78% of the base.

The market size and growth

How big is the neobanking market depends entirely on who you ask. Grand View Research valued it near $211 billion in 2025; other research houses put 2025 closer to $383 billion (see the table below). The gap comes from what each firm counts as revenue versus transaction value.

What they agree on is the direction: very fast growth. Grand View projects a 61.9% CAGR through 2033, which would take the market to a striking $9.4 trillion. Long-range figures like that are best read as a signal of momentum rather than a precise forecast.

Who uses a neobank

Neobank users skew young but not as young as the stereotype. Millennials and Gen Z are about 78% of the global base, and roughly 62% of users are aged 18-35. Women make up about 48% of users worldwide, a fairly even split.

In the US the picture is more middle-aged than expected: about 31% of neobank customers are 30-44 and 36% are 45-64, tracking close to the general adult population. Digital-only banking has clearly moved beyond early adopters into the mainstream.

Adoption by country

Adoption varies enormously by market. Brazil leads at about 43% of adults using a neobank, powered almost single-handedly by Nubank, followed by India at 26% and Ireland at 22% (see the chart and table below). These are aggregator estimates.

The US, despite having the most valuable neobanks, sits near the bottom of the tracked list at about 15%, alongside the Philippines at 13%. That gap between US company value and US household penetration is one reason players like Chime keep chasing primary-account status.

The US neobank landscape

In the US, more than 75 million consumers now have a primary or secondary relationship with a neobank, up from fewer than 5 million in 2018 (see the table below). By share, Block's Cash App leads at roughly 45% and Chime is the top pure-play neobank at about 10%.

2025 was a turning point for US profitability: Chime posted its first profitable quarter, Cash App has been profitable in segment reporting since 2023, and SoFi has been GAAP-profitable since Q4 2023. Varo, the first US neobank with a national charter, kept cutting costs to extend runway.

Chime: the largest US neobank

Chime is the biggest digital bank in the US by active members, reaching 9.5 million in Q4 2025, up from 8.0 million a year earlier (see the table below). Revenue rose 31% to $2.19 billion in 2025, and members ran $133.7 billion of purchase volume through their Chime cards.

Chime went public on Nasdaq in June 2025, pricing at $27 a share for $864 million of proceeds and a roughly $11.6 billion fully diluted valuation, then popping about 37% on day one (CNBC). Average revenue per active member reached $257.

Revolut: the global challenger

Revolut is the scale story of Europe. In 2025 its retail customer base grew 30% to 68.3 million, business customers rose 33% to 767,000, and revenue jumped 46% to $6.0 billion, delivering a record pre-tax profit of $2.3 billion, up 57% (Revolut).

Customer balances surged 66% to $67.5 billion, the largest deposit base of any Western neobank. Management is targeting roughly $9 billion of revenue and $3.5 billion of profit in 2026 as it pushes harder into the US market.

Nubank: the world's biggest digital bank

Nubank, the Brazilian giant, is the largest neobank on earth. It closed 2025 with 131 million customers after adding 17 million in the year, and its Brazilian base alone covers more than 60% of the country's adult population (Nu Holdings).

It is expanding across Latin America, with 13.1 million customers in Mexico (about 14% of adults) and 3.8 million in Colombia. Full-year 2025 revenue rose 45% to $16.3 billion, and its Brazil deposit base reached $30.4 billion, proving neobanks can scale profitably in emerging markets.

The biggest neobanks head to head

Ranked by customers, the field is topped by Nubank (131 million) and Revolut (68 million), then a large gap down to SoFi (14.7 million members), Monzo (12.2 million), Chime (9.5 million active members), N26 (8 million-plus), and Starling (4.6 million) (see the chart and table below).

Comparisons come with caveats: Chime reports active members while others count total registered customers, so the true engagement gap is narrower than raw totals suggest. Revenue currencies and deposit definitions also differ across the group.

Deposits and customer balances

Deposits are where neobanks turn users into a real bank balance sheet. Revolut leads Western players with $67.5 billion of customer balances (up 66% in 2025), while Nubank holds about $30.4 billion in Brazil and Monzo holds £16.6 billion in the UK (see the table above).

US neobanks like Chime typically hold customer deposits at partner banks rather than on their own books, so a clean deposit figure is less visible. That partner-bank model is why FDIC coverage on a neobank account flows through the sponsor bank, a detail worth checking.

Revenue and what a neobank earns per user

Neobank economics run on thin per-user revenue at massive scale. In the US, annual revenue per user sits around $70-80, while Chime's average revenue per active member reached $257 in Q4 2025, reflecting how much more it monetizes primary-account users through interchange.

At the top, Revolut's $6.0 billion and Nubank's $16.3 billion of 2025 revenue show what happens when tens of millions of engaged users are cross-sold cards, savings, credit, and crypto. Getting users to make the neobank their primary account is the whole game.

Most neobanks still don't make money

For all the growth, profitability remains rare. Aggregator estimates suggest roughly 76% of neobanks worldwide are still unprofitable, and fewer than 5% reach profitability within 18 months of launch. Customer acquisition is cheap; durable per-user margins are not.

The winners of 2025 (Nubank, Revolut, Chime, SoFi) share one trait: they turned free accounts into primary financial relationships with interchange, lending, and subscriptions. The many that stay unprofitable tend to be secondary spending accounts users never fully switch to.

What it means for you

For consumers, neobanks offer low fees, strong apps, and features like early direct deposit, but the partner-bank structure means it is worth confirming how your deposits are insured and which sponsor bank holds them. Convenience is real; the banking license usually sits one layer back.

For investors, the category is now investable through public names like Nubank, SoFi, and Chime rather than only late-stage private rounds. The signal to watch is not user count but revenue per active user and the path to profit, since growth alone has never been the hard part here.

Frequently asked questions

What is a neobank?

A neobank is a digital-only bank with no physical branches, run entirely through a mobile app. Most do not hold their own banking license and instead operate on top of a partner (sponsor) bank. Examples include Chime, Revolut, Nubank, Monzo, and SoFi.

How many people use neobanks?

Roughly 350 million people worldwide use a neobank as of 2026, up from about 146 million in 2021. Because many users hold accounts at more than one neobank, total customer relationships across brands exceed 500 million. These are aggregator estimates.

What is the largest neobank in the world?

Nubank, based in Brazil, is the largest with about 131 million customers at the end of 2025. Revolut is second with 68.3 million retail customers. In the US, Chime is the biggest neobank with 9.5 million active members.

How big is the neobanking market?

Grand View Research valued the global neobanking market near $211 billion in 2025, though other research firms estimate closer to $383 billion. Most forecasters project very fast growth, with CAGR estimates ranging from roughly 47% to 62% over the next several years.

Are neobanks profitable?

Most are not. Aggregator estimates suggest about 76% of neobanks remain unprofitable, and fewer than 5% reach profit within 18 months. The exceptions are scale leaders like Nubank, Revolut, Chime, and SoFi, all of which turned profitable by 2025.

Is my money safe in a neobank?

Deposits are usually insured, but through the partner bank that actually holds the money, not the neobank itself. In the US that means FDIC coverage flows through the sponsor bank. It is worth confirming which bank holds your funds and how the insurance applies before you rely on it.
