The space economy is bigger than most people realize and growing fast. The Space Foundation pegged the global total at a record $613 billion in 2024, up 7.8% from the year before (see the table below). That is the broadest count, spanning commercial revenue and government spending.
Other trackers measure narrower slices and report smaller numbers. The Satellite Industry Association counts the satellite industry plus government at $429 billion for 2025, and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis measured the domestic space economy's contribution to US GDP at $131.8 billion (0.5%) in 2022. Different scopes, not contradictions.

Two numbers, one industry
If you see the space economy described as both $429 billion and $613 billion, both can be right. The Space Foundation's figure is the broad space economy; the SIA's counts the satellite industry (services, ground equipment, manufacturing, launch) plus government budgets, which excludes some non-satellite commercial and reach activity.
The takeaway is to always check what a source is counting. For headline totals we lead with the Space Foundation's broad $613 billion (2024). For the plumbing of the industry, the SIA's segment detail is the standard reference, and it is the one we use to break revenue down below.
The road to $1 trillion
The most-cited forecast is that the space economy roughly triples over a decade. WEF and McKinsey project about $1.8 trillion by 2035, up from around $630 billion in 2023, growing at almost twice the rate of global GDP (see the chart below). The upside scenario reaches $2.3 trillion; downside cases run well below.
The Space Foundation's shorter-horizon view is that the total could cross $1 trillion as soon as 2032. The two forecasts are consistent: steady high-single-digit growth compounds quickly. More than 60% of the projected increase comes from non-space industries adopting space tech, per WEF.

Backbone and reach
WEF and McKinsey split the space economy in two. 'Backbone' is the space industry proper: satellites, launchers, and services like GPS and broadcast TV, worth about $330 billion in 2023. 'Reach' is space technology embedded in other industries, such as ride-hailing apps using positioning, worth about $300 billion (see the table below).
The interesting part is the inversion. By 2035 backbone is projected to reach $755 billion, but reach is expected to exceed $1 trillion, meaning most of the growth shows up in supply chains, food and beverage, defense, retail, and digital communications rather than in rockets themselves.

Commercial versus government
The private sector now dominates. Commercial activity is roughly 78% of the space economy, with government the other 22%, per the Space Foundation. That is a reversal from the Apollo era, when government was essentially the whole industry, and it is why launch cadence and satellite counts track private constellations.
Government spending is still large and still growing, though. Novaspace put global government space budgets at a record $135 billion in 2024, up 10% year over year. What changed is that commercial revenue, led by satellite broadband, now grows faster and starts from a much larger base.
Inside the satellite industry
Satellites are the commercial core, and the money is not where most people guess. Of the SIA's $303 billion commercial satellite industry in 2025, ground equipment (dishes, chipsets, GNSS receivers) was the largest slice at $165.2 billion, and satellite services (broadband, TV, remote sensing) were $105.0 billion (see the chart and table below).
Building and launching satellites is surprisingly small by revenue: manufacturing was $20.4 billion and launch services $12.4 billion in 2025, though launch grew 33% on the year. In other words, the value is in the recurring services and the hardware in your hand, not the rockets, which are a cost to be driven down.

The launch boom
The most visible sign of the space boom is the launch rate. Orbital launch attempts went from 114 in 2020 to 186 in 2022, 259 in 2024, and a record 324 in 2025 (see the chart below). In the first half of 2025 something reached orbit roughly every 28 hours.
This is not incremental. Reusable rockets collapsed the cost per launch, which made mega-constellations economic, which in turn created demand for still more launches. The SIA counted 4,434 satellites deployed in 2025 alone, the vast majority of them small broadband satellites.

SpaceX and the launch leaderboard
One company drives the record. SpaceX flew 134 Falcon launches in 2024, more than every other operator on the planet combined, and topped 165 orbital flights in 2025. China was a distant second at 68 launches in 2024, followed by Russia (17), Japan, India, and Europe in single digits (see the table below).
That concentration is a double-edged sword for the industry: it means dramatically cheaper access to orbit, but also heavy dependence on a single private provider. US launch companies captured about 63% of global launch revenue in 2025 per the SIA.

Starlink and the satellites overhead
There have never been so many active satellites: the SIA counted 14,266 operational satellites at the end of 2025, up nearly tenfold in a decade. SpaceX's Starlink operated the majority, with roughly 9,350 satellites in orbit by late 2025 and its nearest competitor, OneWeb, under 700.
The business behind the hardware is scaling just as fast. Starlink grew from 1 million subscribers in 2022 to over 9 million by end-2025 and passed 10 million across 160+ markets in early 2026 (see the table below). Satellite broadband subscribers rose 62% in 2025 alone.

SpaceX by the numbers
SpaceX is the space economy's bellwether. Sacra estimates it generated $18.7 billion in revenue in 2025, up 43% from $13.1 billion in 2024, and Starlink alone contributed $11.4 billion, about 61% of the total and now the majority of the business (Sacra).
Its valuation has moved just as sharply. SpaceX was valued around $350 billion in early 2025, then completed an IPO in June 2026 at roughly a $2.3 trillion post-listing valuation, one of the largest ever. That single company is worth several times the entire annual commercial satellite industry.
Who governments are spending
Public money still shapes the industry, and it is increasingly about defense. Global government space budgets hit $135 billion in 2024, of which $73 billion (54%) was defense, per Novaspace. The United States led at roughly $79.7 billion, about 59% of the world total, down from over 75% in 2000 (see the table below).
China is a fast-growing second at an estimated $20 billion, and European government spending jumped 12% to about $15.4 billion in 2025 on rising defense budgets. US civil spending, NASA, was about $24.4 billion for FY2026 after Congress rejected proposed cuts; the rest of US spending is military and intelligence.

Private investment in space
After a 2021 boom and a 2023 hangover, private capital came back. Space Capital tracked about $26 billion of investment into space companies in 2024, up 30% year over year, with venture capital the dominant form at roughly 72% of the total (Space Capital).
The defining event was liquidity: SpaceX's June 2026 IPO gave public investors direct access for the first time and reset expectations for the whole sector. For most investors, space exposure still runs through diversified aerospace and defense names and a handful of thematic ETFs rather than pure-play startups.
Debris, jobs, and tourism
Growth has side effects and adjacencies. Space surveillance networks now track roughly 40,000 objects, of which only about 11,000 are active payloads; ESA estimates over 1.2 million debris fragments larger than 1 cm, a rising collision risk. The US private space workforce topped 370,000, and nearly half of new hires were under 35.
Space tourism, by contrast, is still tiny: only about 140 people have flown as private space travelers in 25 years, split across Blue Origin (about 92), Virgin Galactic (23), and SpaceX/Axiom (18). It is a headline generator, not yet a material revenue line in the space economy.
What it means for investors
The space economy is a real, fast-compounding growth theme, not science fiction. It is roughly $600 billion today and credibly headed toward $1.8 trillion by 2035, with the value concentrated in recurring services (broadband, positioning, imagery) and the ground hardware that uses them, not in the rockets.
The catch for investors is access: the marquee name, SpaceX, only became public in mid-2026, and much of the sector is still private or embedded inside large defense contractors. A thematic basket of listed launch, satellite, and space-adjacent defense and connectivity companies is the practical way to own the trend, sized as a satellite position rather than a core holding given the concentration and volatility.
