What does Kuehne & Nagel International AG (KHNGY) do?
Kuehne + Nagel does not own ships or aircraft. It buys capacity from ocean carriers and airlines, consolidates shipments from around 400,000 customers, and earns the spread between what it charges and what it pays, plus fees for customs, warehousing and supply-chain management. The company reports four business units. Sea Logistics (CHF 8.8 billion of 2025 net turnover, CHF 585 million of recurring EBIT) and Air Logistics (CHF 7.3 billion, CHF 454 million) are the profit engines and together make it the global number one forwarder by volume. Road Logistics (CHF 3.5 billion, CHF 86 million) runs trucking and customs brokerage, mostly in Europe and North America, and Contract Logistics (CHF 4.8 billion, a record CHF 255 million) operates warehouses and fulfilment. The group has about 88,000 employees at over 1,300 sites in close to 100 countries.
The business was founded in 1890 in Bremen, Germany, by August Kühne and Friedrich Nagel, and later moved its base to Switzerland; headquarters is in Schindellegi, in the canton of Schwyz. The shares have been listed since 1994 and trade on the SIX Swiss Exchange as KNIN. Acquisitions such as Apex (Asian air freight) and IMC (US port drayage) have deepened its air and US networks. Stefan Paul is chief executive, Markus Blanka-Graff is chief financial officer and Dr. Joerg Wolle chairs the board.
Ownership is unusual for a company of this size. Klaus-Michael Kühne, grandson of a co-founder, controlled a majority of the shares (reported at about 53%) through Kühne Holding AG, and he also held about 30% of container line Hapag-Lloyd. He died on 24 August 2026 at age 89. German press reports say his Kühne Foundation owns Kühne Holding, which means the controlling block is expected to stay concentrated rather than be sold into the market, though the details of succession have not been fully set out publicly.
Financially, Kuehne + Nagel is coming down from the freight boom of 2021 and 2022. Net turnover was CHF 24.5 billion in 2025 (down 1%), reported EBIT was CHF 1.24 billion after cost-cutting charges (recurring EBIT CHF 1.38 billion, down 17%), earnings were CHF 925 million and free cash flow rose 48% to CHF 917 million. In the first half of 2026 net turnover was CHF 12.2 billion and recurring EBIT CHF 689 million, down 3% at constant currency, but the second quarter turned up: net turnover +8% and EBIT +11%, led by a 35% jump in Air Logistics profit. Management raised full-year recurring EBIT guidance to CHF 1.35 to 1.55 billion. KHNGY is an unsponsored ADR on the OTC Pink market. Market listings describe each ADR as one-fifth of a KNIN share. Prices move with the Swiss franc, and dividends reach US holders after Swiss withholding tax, which is 35% at source (a portion can be reclaimed under the US-Swiss tax treaty).
What's driving Kuehne & Nagel International AG (KHNGY)?
1. Air freight and the tech cycle
Air Logistics delivered the strongest numbers in the first half of 2026. Second-quarter net turnover rose 20% to CHF 2.2 billion and EBIT rose 35% to CHF 154 million, with a 31% conversion rate (EBIT as a share of gross profit). Volumes were 1.1 million tonnes for the half, up 3% year on year in Q2, and the company points to semiconductors and cloud infrastructure as the main drivers, including moving Google cloud equipment from Asia to the United States. Export strength from Southeast Asia helped. This is the area most exposed to the data-centre build-out, which helps while that cycle runs and leaves a concentration if it slows.
2. Recovery in sea freight unit profits
Sea Logistics is the largest unit and the one that fell hardest after 2022: recurring EBIT dropped from CHF 857 million in 2024 to CHF 585 million in 2025. In Q2 2026 it earned CHF 140 million of EBIT on CHF 2.2 billion of net turnover, with the conversion rate up four points from Q1 to 29%. Container volumes were 2.1 million TEU in the first half, with Q2 down 1% year on year but up 8% from Q1. Management credits cost control for a 14% sequential rise in profit per container and reports share gains on Asia to Europe and Asia to North America trades, while European exports stayed weak.
3. Cost cuts and AI productivity
A cost reduction programme targeting more than CHF 200 million of savings was implemented in the fourth quarter of 2025, and the company expects it to deliver more than CHF 120 million of gross savings in 2026. On top of that, management has put a figure on AI: a projected 5% productivity uplift across more than 25,000 white-collar staff in sea, air and support functions, worth an estimated CHF 100 to 150 million a year from 2027. Kuehne + Nagel owns its transport management system and develops much of its software in house, which it argues makes AI agents easier to deploy, and it opened a new IT centre in India in 2026. The company says it will track progress through orders per employee and cost per order.
4. Road and contract logistics
The two smaller units are steadier. Road Logistics grew Q2 2026 net turnover 14% to CHF 1.0 billion and EBIT 29% to CHF 36 million, citing share gains in every region, AI-enabled customs clearance and some shift from sea to road in the Middle East. Søren Schmidt took over the global road business on 1 May 2026. Contract Logistics grew Q2 net turnover 2% to CHF 1.2 billion and EBIT 21% to CHF 51 million, has more than 30 new contracts in implementation, and says new warehouse space for cloud providers will exceed 300,000 square metres.
5. Guidance and cash generation
The raised 2026 guidance of CHF 1.35 to 1.55 billion of recurring EBIT compares with an earlier range of CHF 1.25 to 1.40 billion (itself raised from an initial CHF 1.2 to 1.4 billion) and with CHF 1.38 billion achieved in 2025. It assumes currency translation costs no more than 5% and a 25% tax rate. First-half free cash flow was CHF 310 million against CHF 295 million a year earlier, and net debt excluding leases was CHF 1.18 billion at the end of June. The asset-light model usually converts most earnings into cash, which has historically funded large dividends.
What are the risks to Kuehne & Nagel International AG (KHNGY)?
Kuehne + Nagel's earnings depend on global trade volumes and on the spread it earns between carrier rates and customer prices, and both can move fast. Recurring EBIT fell 17% in 2025 and was still down in the first half of 2026 at constant currency, and the company itself describes global growth as tempered by persistent geopolitical, macroeconomic and trade uncertainty. Tariff changes, sanctions or shipping disruptions such as Red Sea diversions can lift rates for a time and then reverse. Air freight growth is concentrated in semiconductors and cloud infrastructure, so a pause in data-centre spending would hit the strongest unit. Currency is a structural drag for a franc-reporting company that earns mostly in dollars and euros: translation cut H1 2026 EBIT and net earnings by about 6%, and the guidance assumes up to 5% for the year. Large forwarders also face competition from carriers selling end-to-end logistics directly and from digital forwarders, and the CHF 100 to 150 million AI benefit is a management projection with no track record yet. Governance is a live question after Klaus-Michael Kühne's death in August 2026: Kühne Holding's majority stake, held through his foundation, gives outside shareholders little influence, and any change in how that block is managed would matter to the shares. For KHNGY holders specifically, the ADR is unsponsored and trades on OTC Pink with thinner liquidity than KNIN in Zurich, the company files no reports with the SEC, depositary fees may apply, and Swiss withholding tax of 35% is deducted from dividends at source.
Is KHNGY a buy or a sell?
We give no verdict on Kuehne & Nagel International AG. Both cases are real, which is why the question is contested at all, so here is the strongest version of each.
The case for buying. Air freight and the tech cycle. Air Logistics delivered the strongest numbers in the first half of 2026.
The case against. Kuehne + Nagel's earnings depend on global trade volumes and on the spread it earns between carrier rates and customer prices, and both can move fast.

How is Kuehne & Nagel International AG (KHNGY) valued? (approximate, October 2026)
A simple financial snapshot. These are approximations and refresh quarterly; for current figures see Kuehne & Nagel International AG's investor relations page or your broker.
- Net turnover (FY2025): ~CHF 24.5B (-1%)
- Recurring EBIT (FY2025): ~CHF 1.38B (-17%)
- Recurring EBIT (H1 2026): ~CHF 689M
- FY2026 recurring EBIT guidance: CHF 1.35B to 1.55B
- Free cash flow (FY2025): ~CHF 917M
- Dividend (paid 2026, for FY2025): CHF 6.00 per share
The figures describe a forwarder that has worked through the post-pandemic reset. Trailing net turnover is about CHF 24 billion, and recurring EBIT on a trailing basis is about CHF 1.3 billion, both well below the boom years. The raised guidance midpoint of CHF 1.45 billion would be a modest increase on 2025, carried by Air Logistics and cost savings rather than by sea freight rates. Free cash flow of CHF 917 million in 2025 roughly matched earnings, which is typical of an asset-light model and is what supports the CHF 6.00 dividend. With one ADR equal to one-fifth of a share, the per-ADR dividend before tax is about CHF 1.20.
Who competes with Kuehne & Nagel International AG (KHNGY)?
Global freight forwarders
The closest peers are DSV (which bought DB Schenker in 2025), DHL Global Forwarding (part of DHL Group), Expeditors International, CEVA Logistics (owned by CMA CGM), Nippon Express and Kerry Logistics. They compete for the same shipper contracts in ocean and air, mostly on network reach, price and IT integration.
Carriers selling end-to-end logistics
Container lines such as Maersk, MSC and CMA CGM have pushed into door-to-door logistics, customs and warehousing, competing directly with forwarders for large customers. Kuehne + Nagel also buys capacity from these same carriers, so the relationship is both supplier and rival.
Contract logistics and road
In warehousing and fulfilment it competes with GXO Logistics, DHL Supply Chain, ID Logistics and Rhenus. In road freight and brokerage it meets C.H. Robinson in North America and DSV and DHL Freight in Europe.
Digital forwarders and platforms
Flexport and other tech-led forwarders, along with freight marketplaces, compete for smaller shippers with online quoting and tracking. Kuehne + Nagel responds with its own digital tools and a stated focus on small and mid-sized customers, which made up about 52% of its Q2 2026 sea freight business.

How do I buy Kuehne + Nagel stock in the US?
+
Many US brokers let customers trade KHNGY like a regular ticker, though some restrict OTC securities or add fees. Volume is thin compared with Zurich, so spreads can be wider. When does Kuehne + Nagel report earnings?
+
Kuehne + Nagel reports quarterly. Its closed period for nine-month 2026 results runs from 5 to 22 October 2026, so third-quarter results are expected around 23 October. Sea Logistics recurring EBIT fell from CHF 857 million in 2024 to CHF 585 million in 2025, and group recurring EBIT fell 17% that year.
