What does Nomura Research Institute Ltd. (NRILY) do?

Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. (NRI) builds, runs and consults on information systems for large Japanese companies and government bodies. It reports four segments. Financial IT Solutions is the largest, with ~¥405 billion of revenue in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026 (FY3/2026), serving securities firms, insurers and banks with custom systems and with shared platforms that many clients run on at once, such as THE STAR for brokerage back offices, T-STAR for asset managers and BESTWAY for bank fund sales. Industrial IT Solutions (~¥280 billion) serves distribution, manufacturing, services and the public sector. IT Platform Services (~¥222 billion, much of it internal to the other segments) runs data centers, cloud and security, and Consulting (~¥69 billion) is the think-tank and strategy arm. Group revenue was ¥814.7 billion, up 6.5%, and overseas revenue was only ~13% of the total.

The company traces back to 1965, when the original Nomura Research Institute was founded as what NRI calls Japan's first full-scale private think tank, and to Nomura Computer Systems, set up in 1966. The two merged in 1988 to form today's NRI, which listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2001. Over the past decade it bought abroad to build a second leg outside Japan, mainly in Australia (NRI Australia, including the Planit testing business and the brokerage-services firm AUSIEX) and in North America (Core BTS, now rebranded NRI North America). Those deals are the source of FY3/2026's big write-down.

Nomura Holdings remains the largest shareholder with ~20.1% of shares outside treasury as of March 2026, followed by Japanese trust banks, Nippon Life (~4.3%) and the NRI employee stock ownership association (~4.1%). Nomura Properties holds another ~2.8%. Kaga Yanagisawa is President and CEO. The group had 16,894 employees as of March 31, 2026, about 7,982 of them at the parent company. NRI's fiscal year ends March 31, and it pays dividends twice a year.

The investment picture splits into two stories. Reported operating profit fell 56.8% to ¥58.3 billion in FY3/2026 because NRI booked ~¥97 billion of impairments on NRI Australia and Core BTS, which pushed profit attributable to owners down to ¥15.3 billion. Strip out those one-offs and business profit rose 16.3% to ¥156.7 billion, a 19.2% margin, and the first quarter of FY3/2027 showed operating profit up 12.0% with a 19.8% margin. Management guides to ¥175 billion of operating profit this fiscal year and targets ¥200 billion by FY3/2029, and it spent ~¥70 billion on buybacks between May and June 2026. NRILY itself is an unsponsored Citibank ADR traded over the counter, so holders get NRI's yen economics translated into dollars.

What's driving Nomura Research Institute Ltd. (NRILY)?

1. Financial IT and shared platforms

Financial IT Solutions is where most of NRI's profit sits. In FY3/2026 the segment grew revenue 8.7% to ¥405.2 billion and operating profit 20.6% to ¥74.3 billion, a margin of 18.3%. Shared online platforms matter because they are recurring: a brokerage that runs its back office on THE STAR, a system NRI has offered since 1974 and describes as the most widely used brokerage system in Japan, tends to stay for years. NRI wants ~¥55 billion of extra Financial IT revenue by FY3/2029. The first quarter of FY3/2027 kept the pace, with segment revenue up 8.9% and operating profit up 18.9%.

2. AI as a product and as a cost lever

The medium-term plan for 2026 to 2028 (MTP2028) makes AI the first of three growth areas. NRI targets revenue from AI-driven business transformation of more than ¥300 billion by FY3/2029, against roughly ¥30 billion in FY3/2026, and says that by FY3/2029 every new project will be AI-related. It plans ~¥80 billion of AI investment over three years and names Anthropic among the AI companies it intends to work with. On the cost side, NRI says certain projects in FY3/2026 saw productivity gains of 10 to 30 times between detailed design and unit testing, and it targets full adoption of its AI development tools by FY3/2029. The tension for investors is that faster development can either widen margins or reduce the billable hours clients expect to pay for.

3. Digital security and cloud

IT Platform Services was the fastest-growing segment last year, with revenue up 10.0% to ¥221.5 billion and operating profit up 27.1% to ¥38.6 billion. The first quarter of FY3/2027 added another 10.3% revenue growth and a 24.8% rise in operating profit, led by the digital security business. MTP2028 sets a target of ~¥128 billion of digital security revenue by FY3/2029, up from ~¥96 billion, backed by ~¥20 billion of investment, a global security operations center and a planned 2,000-person team in Japan.

4. Social DX and public-sector systems

NRI has a sizeable business building systems for the Japanese state, including work on the My Number social security and tax ID system, which it groups under what it calls Social DX. MTP2028 folds this into a 'social co-creation services' area with a revenue target of ~¥235 billion by FY3/2029, up from ~¥193 billion. Industrial IT Solutions is expected to add ~¥45 billion of revenue partly by taking Social DX work into industrial and public clients. Public work is lumpy, though: in the June 2026 quarter the Consulting segment's operating profit fell 8.7% because public-sector orders were slow to arrive and consultant utilization dipped.

5. Fixing the overseas businesses

The FY3/2026 write-downs, ¥77.0 billion at NRI Australia and ¥19.9 billion at Core BTS, followed lower consulting and managed-services orders in Australia and a weaker cloud consulting business in the US. MTP2028 changes the goal from scale to steady profit: overseas revenue of ~¥120 billion and an operating margin of ~5% by FY3/2029. In Australia NRI has merged NRI Australia with Planit, exited activity outside the region and moved the business into the Financial IT segment to work alongside AUSIEX. In North America the related units are being folded into Core BTS, renamed NRI North America. Overseas revenue was ¥108.7 billion in FY3/2026, down 3.4%.

6. Capital returns and the 25% ROE target

MTP2028 raises the return-on-equity target to around 25% from FY3/2027 onward, keeps a 40% dividend payout policy and allows flexible buybacks. NRI bought ¥70 billion of its own stock (14.7 million shares) between May 15 and the end of June 2026 and cancelled 20.0 million treasury shares on June 30, cutting issued shares to ~561.2 million. The annual dividend rose from ¥63 for FY3/2025 to ¥77 for FY3/2026 and is forecast at ¥84 (¥42 twice a year) for FY3/2027. The plan keeps net debt below 1.3 times EBITDA. The balance sheet is conservative: the net debt-to-equity ratio was 0.05 times at March 2026.

What are the risks to Nomura Research Institute Ltd. (NRILY)?

The most visible risk is that NRI's acquisitions abroad keep disappointing: the ~¥97 billion of FY3/2026 impairments at NRI Australia and Core BTS wiped out most of that year's reported profit, and the new targets of ~¥120 billion of overseas revenue at a ~5% margin still have to be delivered by businesses that shrank last year. At home, revenue is concentrated in Japanese financial institutions, so a slowdown in IT spending by brokers, banks or insurers, or consolidation among them, would hit the largest and most profitable segment; the company's own outlook warns that spending may be held back if client earnings weaken. Generative AI cuts both ways for a firm that bills for system development: NRI reports 10x to 30x productivity gains on some projects, which could lift margins but could also push clients to expect lower prices or to do more in-house. Competition for scarce engineers in Japan can also squeeze project margins. Public-sector work is lumpy, as the June 2026 quarter showed when slow public orders cut Consulting profit by 8.7%. Nomura Holdings' ~20% stake gives it influence and also means any future sell-down could weigh on the shares. For NRILY holders specifically, returns are exposed to the yen-dollar rate, the ADR is an unsponsored over-the-counter program with thinner trading and wider spreads than the Tokyo listing, and Japanese tax is withheld from dividends before they reach US holders. Finally, the ¥175 billion operating-profit forecast for FY3/2027 assumes growth continues while NRI steps up spending on AI, security and R&D (forecast at ¥8 billion, up 47.8%).

Is NRILY a buy or a sell?

We give no verdict on Nomura Research Institute Ltd.. Both cases are real, which is why the question is contested at all, so here is the strongest version of each.

The case for buying. Financial IT and shared platforms. Financial IT Solutions is where most of NRI's profit sits.

The case against.

How is Nomura Research Institute Ltd. (NRILY) valued? (approximate, October 2026)

A simple financial snapshot. These are approximations and refresh quarterly; for current figures see Nomura Research Institute Ltd.'s investor relations page or your broker.

  • Revenue (FY3/2026): ~¥814.7B (+6.5%)
  • Revenue (TTM to June 2026): ~¥829B
  • Business profit (FY3/2026, excl. impairments): ~¥156.7B (19.2% margin)
  • Operating profit guidance (FY3/2027): ~¥175B on ~¥850B revenue
  • Dividend per share (FY3/2027 forecast): ¥84 (¥42 semiannual)
  • Net debt-to-equity (March 2026): ~0.05x

The reported numbers for FY3/2026 look worse than the business underneath them. Operating profit of ¥58.3 billion and earnings per share of ¥26.62 include ~¥97 billion of non-cash impairments, while business profit, which excludes those one-offs, grew 16.3% and operating cash flow rose 13.4% to ¥147.6 billion. Guidance for FY3/2027 implies a return to ~¥175 billion of operating profit and basic EPS of ~¥207, close to the run rate the June 2026 quarter suggested (EPS of ¥51.42 for three months). A shrinking share count from buybacks and cancellations adds to per-share growth. All figures are in yen; NRILY's dollar price moves with both the Tokyo share price and the exchange rate.

FAQ

What is NRILY?

+

NRILY is the ticker for American depositary receipts of Nomura Research Institute, Ltd., which trade over the counter in the US. According to Citibank, the depositary, each ADR represents one ordinary share of NRI, whose main listing is on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market under code 4307. The program is unsponsored, meaning Citibank set it up without a formal deposit agreement with NRI.

How do I buy NRILY stock in the US?

+

NRILY trades on the US over-the-counter market rather than on the NYSE or Nasdaq, so you need a brokerage account that allows OTC securities. Many large US brokers do, sometimes with extra fees or restrictions. Trading volume is usually far lower than in Tokyo, so bid-ask spreads can be wider, and some investors use limit orders for that reason.

Does Nomura Research Institute pay a dividend?

+

Yes. NRI pays twice a year, with record dates of September 30 and March 31. It paid ¥77 per share for the fiscal year ended March 2026 (¥35 interim and ¥42 year-end) and forecasts ¥84 for the year ending March 2027. ADR holders receive the dividend in dollars after currency conversion, depositary fees and Japanese withholding tax.

Is Nomura Research Institute part of Nomura Holdings?

+

Not as a subsidiary. Nomura Holdings is NRI's largest shareholder, holding ~20.1% of shares outside treasury as of March 31, 2026, and Nomura Properties holds another ~2.8%. NRI is listed separately, has its own board and management, and serves many financial institutions besides Nomura.

Who owns Nomura Research Institute?

+

As of March 31, 2026, the largest holders were Nomura Holdings (~20.1%), The Master Trust Bank of Japan trust account (~12.9%), Custody Bank of Japan trust account (~5.4%), Nippon Life Insurance (~4.3%) and the NRI Group employee stock ownership association (~4.1%). The trust-bank accounts largely hold shares for index funds and other institutional investors.

Why did NRI's profit fall in fiscal 2026?

+

Operating profit fell 56.8% to ¥58.3 billion in the year to March 2026 because NRI recorded impairments of ¥77.0 billion at NRI Australia and ¥19.9 billion at Core BTS in North America, after revising both units' business plans. Business profit, which excludes those one-time items, rose 16.3% to ¥156.7 billion, and the impairments had no cash impact.

When does Nomura Research Institute report earnings?

+

NRI's fiscal year runs from April to March and it reports quarterly. First-quarter results for the year to March 2027 came out on July 30, 2026. The first-half (September quarter) results usually arrive in late October; the prior year's interim dividend was approved on October 30, 2025. Full-year results normally come in late April.

What are NRI's medium-term targets?

+

Under its 2026 to 2028 plan, NRI targets revenue of ¥950 billion and operating profit of ¥200 billion, a ~21% margin, for the year ending March 2029, plus return on equity around 25%. Growth is meant to come from AI-driven transformation work, digital security and shared social and financial platforms, while overseas units aim for ~¥120 billion of revenue at a ~5% margin.

Is Nomura Research Institute buying back shares?

+

Yes. NRI authorized up to ¥70 billion or 21 million shares in April 2026 and bought 14.7 million shares for about ¥70 billion by the end of June 2026. It cancelled 20.0 million treasury shares on June 30, 2026, reducing issued shares to ~561.2 million. Its plan describes further buybacks as flexible, depending on the share price.

Are NRILY dividends taxed in Japan?

+

Generally yes. Japan withholds tax on dividends paid to non-residents, and the US-Japan tax treaty sets a reduced rate for portfolio investors. With an unsponsored ADR, the depositary's process determines how much is withheld before payment. US holders can often claim a foreign tax credit for Japanese tax, so a tax adviser can confirm the treatment for a specific account.
