The ground rules
What the connector can and can't do.
Your broker login stays private.
The assistant signs in to Walnut, not your broker.
Holdings are read-only.
No tool can buy, sell or move money.
Every linked broker at once.
It refreshes holdings when Walnut's copy is stale.
Remove it anytime.
Delete it in your assistant's settings.
Works well with
All featuresCommon questions about the connector.
Short answer
Not on their own. With the Walnut connector, either one can read every brokerage account you have linked to Walnut, plus your baskets, goals and alerts.
The assistant never gets your broker password. It signs in to Walnut and sees only what Walnut sees.

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant call outside tools. Walnut's connector gives Claude or ChatGPT tools that read your own account.
A market-data connector returns quotes and filings. Walnut's returns what you own.

No. None of its 32 tools places an order or moves money. Orders happen only in Walnut's own assistant, after you approve them, at Public, a Robinhood Agentic account or eight other brokers such as E*Trade.
It can edit things inside Walnut when you ask, like a basket, a goal or an alert.

Both read the same data. The connector leaves out the tools that trade.
Short answer
Claude (web, desktop and Claude Code), ChatGPT with developer mode, Codex, and any assistant that adds a remote connector by URL.
As of October 2026, every Claude plan allows custom connectors, with Free limited to one. ChatGPT needs a paid plan with developer mode.

- Do I need an API key?
- No. You add the URL and sign in with Walnut.
- Does it cost anything?
- No. Questions run on your own Claude or ChatGPT plan, not Walnut's allowance.
- Do I need a broker connected first?
- No. Without one it still works with your baskets, Ideas and goals.
- Is my data up to date?
- Yes. If Walnut's copy is stale, it pulls fresh holdings first.
- Claude connected but shows no tools. Why?
- Remove it and add it again from claude.ai in your browser.
- What should I ask it first?
- Try "What baskets do I have, and how is each one doing?"
