What does Mercedes Benz Group AG (MBGYY) do?
Mercedes-Benz Group AG designs, builds and sells premium passenger cars under the Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach brands, premium vans such as the Sprinter, Vito and V-Class, and finances and leases those vehicles through Mercedes-Benz Financial Services. In 2025 the group had revenue of €132.2 billion, sold more than 2.1 million vehicles and employed around 164,000 people. In the first half of 2026 Mercedes-Benz Cars brought in about €46 billion of revenue from roughly 837,000 cars, Vans about €8.6 billion and Financial Services about €12.3 billion. Profit leans on the top of the range: the Top-End segment (S-Class, Maybach, G-Class, AMG and similar) made up 14.3% of car sales in the first half, inside the company's 14% to 15% target.
The company traces its roots to Carl Benz's 1886 patent for the motor car. Daimler-Benz merged with Chrysler in 1998, the pairing was undone in 2007, and the company traded as Daimler AG until it spun off Daimler Truck in December 2021 and renamed itself Mercedes-Benz Group in early 2022. It still owns about 30% of Daimler Truck directly and roughly another 5% through a pension vehicle, worth around €12 billion when management said in February 2026 that it would sell part of the stake.
Ola Källenius chairs the Board of Management and Harald Wilhelm is the finance chief, while Martin Brudermüller chairs the Supervisory Board. The two largest known shareholders are Chinese: BAIC Group with about 9.98% of the voting rights and Geely founder Li Shufu with about 9.69% through Tenaciou3 Prospect Investment, with the Kuwait Investment Authority at about 5.33%, according to the company's shareholder-structure page as of June 2026. The share count has fallen from about 1.07 billion at the end of 2023 to about 949 million in mid-2026 because of buybacks. In the US, MBGYY trades on the OTC Pink market as an unsponsored ADR, with one ADR representing 0.25 of an ordinary share, priced in dollars. The primary listing is MBG on the Frankfurt and Stuttgart exchanges, priced in euros.
The investment picture is a business going through a hard reset. Group revenue fell 9.2% in 2025 and EBIT fell 57% to €5.8 billion as tariffs, currency moves and a price war in China ate into margins, and 2026 Cars return on sales is guided at 3% to 5%. Against that, the industrial business held €30.4 billion of net liquidity at the end of June 2026, about 80% of the ~€37.6 billion market value, and Mercedes returned about €5 billion through dividends and buybacks in the first half. The share price fell from about €47 at the start of September 2026 to about €39.6 by early October, near its 52-week low of ~€38.9.
What's driving Mercedes Benz Group AG (MBGYY)?
1. The largest launch programme in the company's history
Mercedes plans more than 40 new models between 2025 and 2027, and the second half of 2026 is when many of them reach customers in volume. The all-new CLA and GLB were already contributing in the second quarter, the new S-Class started in Europe, and order books opened for the electric C-Class and the new GLE and GLS. The all-new electric GLC, which management says has high order volumes, should support second-half deliveries, and an all-electric GLA premiered at the end of July. New models usually price better than the ageing ones they replace, so the launch wave is the main lever for lifting Cars margins. Its costs show up first: launch spending and model changeovers helped push Cars adjusted margin down to 4.0% in the second quarter.
2. Next Level Performance cost cutting
The Next Level Performance programme is Mercedes' answer to lower volumes and prices. In the second quarter of 2026 group administrative expenses fell 14%, research and development spending fell 12% after the 2025 peak, and Cars cost of sales fell 7%. Management says fixed costs are down about 25% since 2019, and NLP actions contributed more than €3.5 billion to 2025 EBIT. The programme has a cash cost: about €1.1 billion of severance payments went out in the first half of 2026, which is a big reason industrial free cash flow fell to €3.0 billion from €4.2 billion a year earlier. In June 2026 it began intensifying productivity measures, focused on German sites.
3. Electric volume finally growing
Mercedes-Benz Cars sold 52,852 battery-electric cars in the second quarter of 2026, up 51% on a year earlier, driven by an 87% jump in Europe, and Källenius said BEV order intake in Europe more than doubled. Management raised its full-year electrified (xEV) share guidance to 23% to 25% from 21% to 23%. The electric C-Class is built at the Kecskemét plant in Hungary, where about €1 billion of investment has doubled the site's footprint, and eVan sales rose 46%. Whether these cars earn margins close to the combustion models they replace is one of the main open questions for 2027.
4. Financial Services and Vans as the steadier earners
While Cars struggled, Financial Services had a strong first half: second-quarter adjusted EBIT rose 70% to €492 million on higher portfolio margins and lower costs, and adjusted return on equity reached 15.3%, so management raised full-year guidance to 12% to 14% from 10% to 12%. Mercedes-Benz Vans kept a 10.2% adjusted margin in the quarter on 94,075 units, with North American sales up 23%, and production of the all-electric VLE on the new Van Architecture started in Spain in June. Together the two divisions earned about €946 million of adjusted EBIT in the quarter, more than Cars did, which cushions the group while the car business resets.
5. Cash returns and the Daimler Truck stake
Mercedes ended 2025 with €32.2 billion of industrial net liquidity and still had €30.4 billion at the end of June 2026 after the dividend and buybacks. The 2025 dividend of €3.50 per share, paid in April 2026, was down from €4.30 a year earlier but still equal to about two-thirds of 2025 earnings per share of €5.34. A €2 billion buyback announced in October 2025 was set to run for about 12 months. The bigger store of value is the Daimler Truck holding, which management said in February 2026 it would partly sell during the year, with proceeds going back to shareholders. Only €417 million of sales had been booked by the end of June, so the size and timing of the rest is something to watch at the third-quarter results.
What are the risks to Mercedes Benz Group AG (MBGYY)?
China is the biggest single risk: Mercedes-Benz Cars sales there fell 30% in the second quarter of 2026 on intense local competition, weak demand and a model changeover, and the company booked €704 million of impairments on Chinese equity-method investments, which cut Cars' reported EBIT to €49 million from €783 million a year earlier. Management has already lowered 2026 guidance for car unit sales and group revenue to slightly below 2025 and expects Cars return on sales in the lower half of the 3% to 5% range. US tariffs on European-built cars were among the reasons 2025 EBIT fell 57%, and the US is a key profit market. First-half industrial free cash flow fell about 30% to €3.0 billion after €1.1 billion of severance, and more restructuring at German sites could add cash costs. Two Chinese shareholders hold close to 20% of the votes between them, which links governance to Chinese industrial policy in ways that are hard to price. The dividend already fell from €4.30 to €3.50 and moves with earnings. For US holders, MBGYY is an unsponsored OTC Pink ADR whose price moves with both the euro share price and the EUR/USD rate, and dividends arrive net of German withholding tax of 26.375% before any treaty reclaim toward 15%. The stock also fell about 16% in September 2026 alone.
Is MBGYY a buy or a sell?
We give no verdict on Mercedes Benz Group AG. Both cases are real, which is why the question is contested at all, so here is the strongest version of each.
The case for buying. The largest launch programme in the company's history. Mercedes plans more than 40 new models between 2025 and 2027, and the second half of 2026 is when many of them reach customers in volume.
The case against.

How is Mercedes Benz Group AG (MBGYY) valued? (approximate, October 2026)
A simple financial snapshot. These are approximations and refresh quarterly; for current figures see Mercedes Benz Group AG's investor relations page or your broker.
- Revenue (TTM to June 2026): ~€129.5B
- Net profit (TTM to June 2026): ~€5.2B (EPS ~€5.28)
- Market cap: ~€37.6B (~$42B; share ~€39.6, ADR ~$11.07)
- Price / trailing earnings: ~7.5x
- Industrial net liquidity (June 30, 2026): ~€30.4B
- Last dividend (2025, paid April 2026): €3.50 per share (~€0.875 per ADR), ~8.8% trailing yield
On trailing numbers Mercedes trades at about 7.5 times earnings, and industrial net liquidity of €30.4 billion is worth about 80% of the company's market value before counting the Daimler Truck stake. The market is valuing the car business at very little, on the view that 3% to 5% margins are the new normal rather than a trough. The ~8.8% trailing yield is based on the €3.50 dividend paid in April 2026; the next one depends on 2026 earnings. First-half 2026 EPS was €2.63 versus €2.69 a year earlier, so earnings have stabilized at a low level rather than recovered. Third-quarter results are the next test of whether the launch wave lifts Cars margins.
Who competes with Mercedes Benz Group AG (MBGYY)?
German premium rivals
BMW (with Mini and Rolls-Royce) and Volkswagen's Audi and Porsche compete model for model with Mercedes in luxury sedans, SUVs and performance cars, and face the same China slowdown and US tariffs. Mercedes shares fell in June 2026 when BMW cut its guidance.
Chinese electric and premium brands
BYD, Geely's Zeekr, Li Auto, Nio, Xiaomi and Huawei-backed brands such as Aito have taken share in China's premium segment with cheaper, software-heavy electric cars. They are the main reason Mercedes' China sales fell 30% in the second quarter of 2026.
Electric and luxury specialists
Tesla competes for electric sedan and SUV buyers in Europe and the US, while Lexus (Toyota), Volvo, Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley and Ferrari compete for different slices of the premium and top-end market where Mercedes earns most of its margin.
Van makers
Ford's Transit, Stellantis, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Renault compete with the Sprinter and Vito in commercial fleets, where Mercedes still earns double-digit margins.

FAQ
What is MBGYY?
+
MBGYY is the ticker for American Depositary Receipts of Mercedes-Benz Group AG that trade over the counter in the US. OTC Markets lists it as an unsponsored ADR on the OTC Pink tier, with one ADR representing 0.25 of an ordinary share. The ordinary shares trade as MBG on the Frankfurt and Stuttgart exchanges in euros.
How do I buy Mercedes-Benz stock in the US?
+
Most US brokers that offer OTC securities let you buy MBGYY in dollars like any other ticker, although some charge extra fees or restrict OTC trades. Some brokers also offer the ordinary shares under the OTC symbol MBGAF or direct access to the Frankfurt listing. Four MBGYY ADRs equal one Frankfurt share, so the ADR price is roughly a quarter of the euro share price converted to dollars.
Does Mercedes-Benz pay a dividend?
+
Yes, once a year, after the annual general meeting in spring. The dividend for 2025 was €3.50 per share, paid in April 2026, down from €4.30 the year before. That works out to about €0.875 per MBGYY ADR before fees. Germany withholds 26.375% at source, and US holders can generally reclaim part of it down to the 15% treaty rate, though the process is slow.
Why has Mercedes-Benz stock fallen?
+
Earnings have dropped sharply. Group EBIT fell 57% in 2025 to €5.8 billion on US tariffs, currency effects and a price war in China, 2026 Cars margins are guided at 3% to 5%, and China car sales fell 30% in the second quarter of 2026. The share slid from about €47 in early September 2026 to about €39.6 in early October.
Who owns Mercedes-Benz?
+
Mercedes-Benz Group is a public company with a broad shareholder base. The largest known holders as of mid-2026 are BAIC Group with about 9.98% of voting rights, Geely founder Li Shufu with about 9.69% through Tenaciou3 Prospect Investment, and the Kuwait Investment Authority with about 5.33%. The rest is held mainly by institutional and retail investors in Europe and elsewhere.
When does Mercedes-Benz report earnings?
+
Mercedes reports quarterly. Second-quarter 2026 results came out in late July 2026, and third-quarter results are usually published in late October, with the exact date on the company's investor relations calendar. Full-year results and the dividend proposal typically follow in February. Watch Cars return on sales, China sales and industrial free cash flow in each release.
Is Mercedes-Benz cheap compared with its earnings?
+
On trailing numbers it trades at about 7.5 times earnings as of October 2026, and industrial net liquidity of €30.4 billion equals roughly 80% of its ~€37.6 billion market value. Investors are pricing in years of thin car margins, so a low multiple alone does not settle whether the shares are undervalued.
How much of Mercedes-Benz's business is in China?
+
China is one of Mercedes' largest car markets and the weakest right now. Car sales there fell 30% in the second quarter of 2026, while sales rose 4% in Europe and 10% in the US; excluding China, global car sales were up 2%. Mercedes also holds Chinese joint-venture stakes, and it booked €704 million of impairments on them in the same quarter.
What is Mercedes-Benz's relationship with Daimler Truck?
+
Daimler Truck was spun off from the old Daimler AG in December 2021, and Mercedes kept about 30% of it directly plus roughly 5% in a pension vehicle, worth around €12 billion in February 2026. Management said it would sell part of the stake during 2026 and return the proceeds to shareholders; €417 million had come in by June.
What is Mercedes-Benz's 2026 guidance?
+
As updated in July 2026, Mercedes expects Cars unit sales and group revenue slightly below 2025, Cars adjusted return on sales of 3% to 5% (lower half), an electrified share of 23% to 25%, and a Financial Services return on equity of 12% to 14%. In February it guided group EBIT significantly above 2025 and industrial free cash flow slightly below.
