AI features
What Schwab's own AI does
As of October 2026, Schwab has two AI products for retail clients. Both work inside Schwab, on Schwab accounts.
Portfolio Insights
AI summaries on the Account Summary page of the holdings that moved most since the prior day, with related news and Schwab commentary.
Charley
A voice or text assistant for quotes, balances, transfers and trading help. Rolling out in phases from October to eligible US clients.
Where Walnut fits
Schwab's tools see Schwab. Walnut reads it next to Fidelity, Robinhood or any other broker you connect, puts each holding against the S&P 500, flags any one name over a quarter of the portfolio, and answers questions about all of it.

Everything else people ask about Schwab, answered plainly.
Short answer
Yes. Schwab has no account minimum and no maintenance fee, charges $0 for online US stock and ETF trades, and sells fractional shares of most US-listed stocks and ETFs from $1. Its robo advisor, Intelligent Portfolios, needs $5,000.
Schwab covers the long-term saver and the active trader in one firm: IRAs and index funds for the first, thinkorswim for charting and options for the second. A beginner can start with a dollar amount instead of the price of a whole share.
Portfolio Insights sums up what moved since the last trading day, and Charley looks up balances and positions. Walnut adds a read across every broker you use: whether a few names now carry most of the risk, and how each holding has done against the S&P 500.

Charles Schwab and Co. is a SIPC member, so securities are protected up to $500,000, including $250,000 for cash, if the firm fails. Schwab adds an Excess SIPC program on top. Neither covers market losses.
Connecting Schwab to Walnut runs through a secure connection where you sign in at Schwab. Walnut never sees or stores your Schwab password, holds no money and moves none, and you can disconnect from Walnut's Brokerage screen at any time.

Short answer
Not directly. Charley, Schwab's own assistant, works inside Schwab, and as of October 2026 Schwab has no official connector for ChatGPT or Claude. An app such as Walnut links Schwab through a secure connection, and its connector lets Claude and ChatGPT read those holdings.
Through Walnut, Schwab is read in full: every position, each one against the S&P 500, and a keep, trim or exit read per holding. Orders are not placed from Walnut at Schwab, so any trade the assistant describes is one you place at Schwab yourself.

- No commission on online US stocks and ETFs and no maintenance fee. Online options cost $0.65 per contract, and a full transfer out costs $50.
- What is Charley at Schwab?
- Schwab's AI assistant, announced September 2026. It answers by voice or text about quotes, balances and transfers, rolling out to eligible US clients.
- Can Walnut trade in my Schwab account?
- No. Walnut reads Schwab in full and places no orders there. You place trades at Schwab, or buy through Public, Robinhood or one of eight other brokers including E*Trade, tastytrade and Webull.
- Does Walnut see my Schwab cost basis?
- No. Schwab holdings arrive without cost basis, so Walnut shows each holding's price return against the S&P 500 rather than profit and loss.

- Is connecting Schwab to Walnut free?
- Yes. Connecting is free, and so is the assistant up to a per-session allowance. Walnut Unlimited, $9.99 a month on the web, lifts that limit.
